Free Beginner Cybersecurity Projects to Add to your Resume

Here are 3 beginner cybersecurity projects that you can complete in a weekend (for free!) 👩🏻‍💻

The best way to get hands-on cybersecurity experience without a job is working on your own technical projects.

If you don’t know where to start, here are a few I recommend that you can add onto your resume!

1. 🔵 Build your own SOC Home Lab (SIEM):

Gerry Auger (SimplyCyber) has an AWESOME walkthrough of this that you can build from scratch for free :D. Project Guide #1 linked here.

By the end of this project, you’ll have created your own home lab using Elastic, perfect to add to anyone’s resume who wants to be an SOC Analyst.

2. 🎣 Create a Phishing Attack Simulator:

You can build out your own phishing simulations using Gophish with this walkthrough guide. Project Guide #2 linked here.

This is a great hands-on project to add to your resume especially if this is a domain of cybersecurity that you’d want to specialize in.

3. 🐞 Set-up your own Host-based Intrusion Detection System (HIDS)

One of my favorite aspects of cybersecurity is the amount of open source tooling we have, so take advantage of them as part of your learning journey. Project Guide #3 linked here.

Hackersploit’s walkthrough helps you get familiar with OSSEC, an open-source endpoint protection tool, so you can get experience with real-time alerts, file checks, rootkit detection, and log monitoring.

If you want even MORE cybersecurity projects, I have another list of the top 5 beginner cybersecurity projects you can work on here. 🌟

I hope these projects can be a good learning experience for you!
